An article on schools may seem an odd editorial choice for a tourist guide. But not when you consider that so many visitors these days are coming to explore Panama either for retirement, residence or work. Many have children of school age and

therefore education is a major factor in their decision. Focus on Panama

guidebook is often their first introduction to the country either before or upon arrival.

We offer a short guide to schools which offer a curriculum in English.

British Education at King’s School

King’s College, The British School of Panama opened in September 2012. Since then the school has gone from strength to strength offering small class sizes for children from Nursery to Year Seven. The school offers the British National Curriculum taught by native British teachers. Head teacher Vanessa Whay explains that when a whole team has the same traditions, expectations and values, this gives the school a real ethos. “We want confident, respectful and enthusiastic learners. Being British there of course will be cricket and rugby!” she says.

Ms. Whay explained that the British Curriculum develops children into lifelong learners. It addresses the social development and the academic achievements of the child as an individual, differentiating their needs.

As they get older the curriculum is a strong, solid programme with IGCSE’s and A-levels, giving the children the opportunity to go to universities all over the world. King’s College was established 40 years ago and has five schools in Spain and one in the UK.

Ms. Whay said that at the suggestion of both the British Ambasador and President Martinelli, King’s College jumped at the opportunity to open in Panama.

Boston School International

Conveniently located in Balboa and now one year old, Boston School International offers a technology-based English language education. The school is growing exactly to plan with the opening of classes in Grades 7, 8 and 9. In September 2014 classes in Grades 10, 11 and 12 will open.

In parallel with this growth the school will achieve certification via the North West Accreditation Commission and also the International Baccalaureate Organization.

What makes Boston School International special is the way state of the art technology is blended into the learning process from Preschool onwards, explained a representative of the school.

There are virtually no textbooks and students can study online using installed resources. Caring empathetic teachers ensure that the process of learning is fun and informative.

The school uses tools such as T-Box MindLab and teaches the Singapore Approach Math System. The school offers a full extracurricular activities program.
