“Friendship through Flowers”

Panama’s Ikebana Association

Ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arranging
Ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arranging,
is alive and well in Panama.
The Panama chapter of the Ikebana International Association will hold a tea, Ikebana exhibition, and fashion show on October 20 in Punta Pacifica. The three-year-old chapter is a social association which holds flower arranging workshops and other artistic events throughout the year.

The Japanese art of flower arranging known as Ikebana, or “kado,” the way of flowers, teaches non-symmetric, minimalistic arrangements of flowers, stems and leaves. The Panama chapter is open to new members. Dates and locations for workshops are posted in The Visitor’s events section.

Ikebana dates back to the introduction of Buddhism to Japan in 538 A.D. when monks practiced arranging flowers. Twelve hundred years ago aristocrats in Japan practiced minimalistic flower arranging and during the Kamakura period (1192-1333) Samurai, the elite warrior class, practiced the art. Five hundred years ago a monk, Ikenobo Sengyo helped formalize the art and training of Ikebana and is often, however mistakenly, given credit for starting the art form.

Members enjoy social activities and social work

It was in 1956 that a North American living in Tokyo, Mrs. Ellen Gordon Allen, founded the Ikebana International Association. The motto of Ikebana International is “Friendship through Flowers.” The international association has chapters in 60 countries, including number 257 in Panama. Its official language is English and its logo is a cherry blossom.

For more information about Ikebana and the October 20th exhibition call Pilar at 6672-8815 or email pilarpila@yahoo.com. Ikebana Panama requests a $10 donation from members and $12 from non members for the October 20 event.

“Strangely Familiar” in Casco

Original production unites over 40 volunteer artistes

The 40-some artistes, among them actors, musicians, dancers and painters, involved in the upcoming production “Strangely Familiar” all have a common goal that goes beyond putting on rock-opera style “concert theater” next weekend at the Anita Villalas Theater in La Plaza de Francia, Casco Antiguo. They are all founding members of a new foundation which is setting out to make dreams come true for artists in Panama who produce original works.

“Strangely Familiar” is a two-act, half theater, half concert bilingual original production set in Casco Viejo. It is about a young woman who sets an eerie set of events into action when she invents an “optophonic” piano which opens up a portal to the “un-dead”. It is set in modern day Casco Viejo, the script and score were written this year by by Zonian Krista Quinn and American Kimberly Hall. These young ladies are putting local talent in the spotlight in an effort that they hope will set a new trend for the arts scene in Panama.

Tickets cost $10 which is a donation to the upcoming foundation. Showings are one weekend only: Friday, October 23 at 8:00 p.m. (after party at Indigo), Saturday, October 24 at 8:00 p.m. (after party at Relic – stub good for one beer) and Sunday at 5:00 p.m. (family activities included).
